By Shana-Tara O’Toole and Tray Brown | Due Process Institute
This past year was the first uninterrupted opportunity post-pandemic to return to making in-person connections with other criminal justice advocates, Hill staff, and directly impacted persons. At Due Process Institute, we were finally able to attend some summits and conferences across the country, resume our annual SCOTUS event, and even gather in person as a staff. We are grateful for each and every face-to-face connection we made at the events we participated in or organized this year. We are, of course, also thankful for all the people we didn’t see in-person. The coalitions we’ve built through email, apps, and video conferencing software are invaluable.
Thank You, Coalition Partners.
We express thanks for the following organizations (in no particular order) who joined Due Process Institute in advocacy letters, amicus briefs, or one of our lobbying campaigns. With over 450 organizations (470 to be exact!), this list includes groups from almost every political ideology and groups that represent communities from across the country and around the world. In each instance, we found common meaning in our missions and collaborated to advocate for a criminal legal system that values the principles of fairness. Furthermore, this compiled list continues the Due Process Institute tradition of posting a Thanksgiving Day blog to express our gratitude to each and every coalition partner we worked with. We believe naming every organization speaks loudly to the collective impact of our work and the widespread bipartisan momentum for criminal legal reform. Thank you to the following organizations for making meaningful criminal legal reform possible in 2022:

Thank You, Amicus Curiae.
In addition to the wonderful organizations we partnered with throughout the year, we want to convey our appreciation for the attorneys and law firms who provided Due Process Institute with pro bono amicus support in the past year. Simply put, these lawyers are bonafide champions of justice. They volunteer countless hours and their legal expertise in crucial due process related cases in state and federal courts. We would be unable to do much of our court-based advocacy without them supplementing our own work. (If you don’t believe us, check out just how many amicus briefs we’re talking about here.) We thank the following people and are eternally grateful for their contributions to our mission:
Abraham Rubert-Schewel of Tin, Fulton, Walker & Owen PLLC and Tyce R. Walters of Latham & Watkins for their work on Community Success Initiative v. Moore
David M. Gossett, Chris Swift, and Meenakshi Krishnan of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP for their work on Wikimedia v. National Security Agency, et al.
Andrew D. Prins, Cherish A. Drain, and Joseph E. Sitzmann of Latham & Watkins LLP for their work on Ruan v. United States
Martha Boersch, Sharon Frase, and Matthew Dirke of Boersch & Illovsky LLP for their work on Lischewski v. United States
Jamie Crooks, Alexander Rose, and Eric Chianese of Fairmark Partners LLP for their work on Hardin v. United States
Douglas E. Litvack, Hope H. Tone-O’Keefe, and Adam M. Caldwell of Jenner & Block LLP for their work on Spencer v. Colorado
Professor Douglas Berman of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and Keith Bradley, Corrine A. Irish, and Ellen H. Phillips of Squire Patton Boggs for their work on Allums v. United States
Collin P. Wedel, Jeffrey T. Green, and Gabriel Schonfeld of Sidley Austin LLP for their work on Cody v. United States
Thank You All.
We could not finish our #GratitudePost without thanking the people at Due Process Institute who made it all happen in 2022. Everything from our advocacy to our events to our website was made possible by a tremendous staff supporting our mission as well as a dedicated Board of Directors. Their daily work on behalf of the organization is impactful and inspiring. And we close with a profound thank you to the people and organizations whose financial support makes our efforts to ensure a fairer criminal legal system possible.
From global conflicts to gas prices to long-term judicial precedents to the midterms, 2022 was full of uncertainty but the organizations and people we have worked with are steadfast in their commitment to criminal legal reform. We look forward to all the work to come in the 118th Congress and we hope to see more faces in 2023 and beyond!
