Every September, Due Process Institute hosts Two Views: An Exploration of SCOTUS’s Criminal Law Docket at the historic Willard Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. This one-of-a-kind event features the nation’s only balanced, bipartisan examination of the Supreme Court’s criminal law docket.
Each year, hundreds of lawyers, judges, congressional staff, policy advocates, and other interested attendees gather to celebrate the Constitution and engage with some of the country’s leading constitutional law experts. The 1st Annual Due Process Torch was presented at the organization’s Constitution Day Celebration on September 17, 2019. It was given to the Sung Family in recognition of their contributions to principles of fairness and due process in our criminal legal system. Mr. Thomas Sung, Mrs. Hwei Lin Sung, and daughter Vera Sung traveled to DC to accept the award on the family’s behalf.
The Sung Family’s story has been told through an award-winning documentary Abacus: Small Enough to Jail. Owners of a small community bank in Chinatown, New York City, the Sung’s bank was the only bank prosecuted following the financial crisis of 2008. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won a News and Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Business and Economic Documentary. (Not to mention an impressive 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes). Once the victims of overcriminalization, the family now seeks to educate others about the need for increased due process protections in our criminal legal system. We honor their commitment to preserving core Constitutional values.
