In an unanimous 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court rejected the “moment of threat” doctrine in Barnes v. Felix and held that courts must consider the totality of circumstances that led to a use of excessive force, rather than only the moment preceding it. With over 1,300 people killed by police last year, this decision will hopefully lead to more accountability for law enforcement and more consistent justice for the victims of police brutality.
